Kudos to the Gauntlet for its coverage of the arrest of suspected sex attacker Ralph Gould. Both of Calgary’s local newspapers mentioned the arrest, but neither adequately followed up and the let the story disappear in the following days, ignoring further developments. They seem to be treating these crimes as University of Calgary and Mount Royal College problems as most of the reported assaults happened on either campus, but they are not–they truly are community issues. The community at large deserves to know how this case is being handled, and because the Calgary Police are still looking for witnesses, the local newspapers should be obliged to carry information to help witnesses step forward. With the local press not doing their job with this issue, leave it to the Gauntlet to not only help lead to the arrest, but also to keep the public informed.
