The Students’ Academic Assembly recently held a discussion regarding course withdraw dates at the University of Calgary. Currently, students wishing to withdraw from a course have until the last day of lectures in each semester to withdraw to avoid receiving a grade counted towards their GPA. They will receive no tuition returned as well as a subsequent “W” on their transcript.
Students at the University of Alberta have the following system (Winter ’04):
• January 10: Last day to withdraw with a full refund and a "W" on transcript.
• January 11-February 5: Last day to withdraw with 50 per cent course tuition returned and a "W" on transcript.
• March 14: Final Day to withdraw with no refund and a "W" on transcript.
Students at the University of Lethbridge have the following system (Winter ’04):
• January 13: Last day to withdraw with no penalties.
• January 14-February 1: Last day to withdraw with 80 per cent of course tuition returned and a "W" on transcript.
• February 2-March 17: Last day to withdraw with 50 per cent of course tuition returned and a "W" on transcript.
• March 17: Final day to withdraw with no refund and a "W" on transcript.
The SAA will be discussing withdraw dates in future meetings. The Registrar’s Office expressed interest in helping the SAA set up a secure proposal of how we would like to see the academic calendar look like about this issue.
We ask that you provide us with your comments regarding any possible changes to Withdrawal dates at the U of C at the Students’ Union’s online forum at www.su.ucalgary.ca/thoughtswap. The item of withdrawal dates will be under the ‘Academic Issues’ section. The SAA is looking for your feedback before we decide how to proceed.
