The Students’ Union’s annual Shinerama events are in high gear, and it’s first few days have proved lucrative.
Geared at raising money for Cystic Fibrosis, Shinerama is a series of events held at different colleges and universities nationally. The SU organizes the event at the University of Calgary.
The event this year started with the traditional Bling-Bling, where faculties compete with each other collecting pennies to gain points, and putting larger change in other faculties’ deposits to lower their points. There was also a shoe-shining event on Stephen avenue.
“The whole U of C 101 has been exceptional with Bling-Bling,” said SU Vice-President Events Alex Vyskocil, who is in charge of the event at the U of C. “We got tons of volunteers. We did great on Stephen Avenue, too, even though the weather was bad.”
The two events comprise the largest fund-raising portion of Shinerama, and both have yielded excellent return.
“Bling-Bling raised a total of $6,119.68” Vyskocil said. “The Shine actually raised close to $3,300. Our totals are up from last year. That is really good.”
