Let’s talk about sex

It’s Sexual Health Awareness Week, which means it’s time to learn about the birds, the bees, and STD’s. And birth control. And responsible sexual behaviour.

SHAW is an annual event run at Calgary post-secondary institutions for the past 11 years, and will be at the U of C Tue., Feb. 15.

“We are a group of nursing students from the University of Calgary working in collaboration with a wide variety of community associations to increase sexual health awareness,” said Simone Rivet, a nursing student involved in organizing the event. “The focus of this week is on promotion of sexual health awareness with an emphasis on education and reduction of risk activities.”

There will be several different booths from organizations like Calgary Birth Control Association, Calgary Regional Health Authority, and AIDS Calgary. Health educators will be present to answer any questions or address any concerns students may have.

“As nursing students, our role will be to spread the messages of sexual health awareness and risk reduction and also to increase the profile of SHAW at the university,” said Rivet.

An inter-faculty gameshow called “What’s Your Mojo?” will be held in MacEwan Students Centre on Feb. 15 from 11:30-1:30. Teams of three to four members are invited to take the 15 minute trivia challenge testing their sexual savvy.

“We are hoping to encourage students to come and see our booth, and learn something new, ask questions if they have any, and gain knowledge about sexual health resources available in the community,” added Rivet.
