According to a recent Ipsos-Reid survey commissioned by Canadian Blood Services, 52 per cent of Canadians say they or someone in their family has needed blood or blood products.
The Youth Donors of Canada are stepping up to make sure that need is filled. The University of Calgary club raises awareness about the need for blood among young people by hosting mobile clinics on campus, arranging life buses to Calgary’s Canadian Blood Services donor clinic and organizing the Bloody Cup competition.
“Most people don’t realize the amount of blood needed to save lives,” said Youth Donors of Canada Vice-President Communications Grayham Gardiner. According to Canadian Blood Services it takes approximately 50 donors to collect enough blood for a victim of a car accident.
Even students who are afraid of needles can join the Youth Donors.
