Film Fest: Amu

By Peter Hemminger

Amu doesn’t start off strongly, playing like a travelogue combined with an incredibly awkward love story throughout its first half. A recent university grad from Los Angeles travels to Delhi to experience the country she left when she was three years old. She marvels at the architecture, has awkward conversations with her cousin at a party, and looks vaguely disturbed while menacing background music overpowers scenes for no obvious reasons. By the time end, though, Amu somehow turns into a powerful political film expertly conveying the horror and raw emotion of a tragic moment in Indian history, the 1984 riots. It’s a little difficult to reconcile the two halves, things might have been improved if the travelogue side was cut short, but given how effective the conclusion is, it doesn’t seem right to complain.
