Weekend update with the Dinos

By Randy Lewis

The women’s volleyball Dinos are on a roll and if the last two weekends are a sign of things to come, this team will be a force to reckon with when playoffs roll around. With consecutive sweeps of the two Saskatchewan schools, the Dinos find themselves atop the Canada West standings with a 7-1 record.

Heading into the Nov. 10 game against the fourth-ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies at the Jack Simpson Gym, the seventh-ranked Dinos were considered the underdogs. All of those notions were quickly laid to rest, however, as the Dinos crushed the Huskies 3-0 behind the strong performance of fourth-year player Alisa Marriott, who had 14 kills to go along with 13 digs. The Dinos followed that win with another outstanding showing on Saturday night, winning once again by a score of 3-0 and sending the Huskies back to Saskatchewan with their tails between their legs.

Last weekend, the University of Regina Cougars paid a visit to Calgary and while they put up a little more fight than their fellow Saskatchewanians did, the outcome of the matches was the same. On Friday night, led by a dominating defensive performance by fourth-year kinesiology student Janna Eggerer who had an amazing 20 digs, the Dinos fought hard to win a tightly contested match 3-1. Finding themselves down 2-1 against the Cougars on Saturday evening, the now fifth-ranked Dinos, not wanting to let the home crowd down, dug deep and came back to score a 15-7 win in the deciding game, giving them their second straight weekend sweep.

A tough pair of matches greets the women Dinos this weekend as they travel up Highway 2 to face the six-time defending national champions, the University of Alberta Pandas.
