Wrestling: Weekend Update

By Kris Kotarski

The Dinos’ wrestling teams are perhaps the best looking in Canada West. And even if they’re not–at least they’re at the best.

The women’s squad continued to dominate last weekend, keeping their number-one ranking for yet another week. The men came out hungry and redeemed last week’s loss to the University of Alberta. All in all, things are good in Dino-land.

The University of Calgary women had a strong showing against the University of Regina Cougars, even without their full squad. Melissa Kindratsky had an easy time winning her weight class and earned Outstanding Female Wrestler honours. The men had a great meet as well, and won five out of the 10 weight classes.

"Joe Louks beat one of his key opponents twice," said coach Lee Vierling with a look of satisfaction. "Mike Stitt also did great."

Other victorious Dinos included Jaron Kooperberg, Brad Neve and Hakan Kadir, while Matt Farrel won second place to cap off a dominant Calgary performance. The Dinos beat both the University of Saskatchewan and the U of R by a sizable margin, which sets the team up well for the Canada West championships.

"All five Canada West teams are stacked up," said Vierling "It’s the closest the conference has been in recent memory."

Next up for the Dinos is a weekend tourney in Manitoba. The women will send a strong squad to compete against both domestic and international competition. The men will send a couple of athletes as well, but the emphasis will be on rest and recovery as many Dino men are nursing injuries.

"Our women will get a good challenge there," Vierling remarked.

As for the upcoming Canada West competition, the Dinos are optimistic.

"We look forward to wresting Regina," said Vierling with a smile on his face. "And the U of A beat us–we’re not going to forget about that."
