Women’s Basketball: Weekend Update

By Scott Lepp

The Dinos travelled to the west coast last weekend for a battle against the reigning Canadian Intercollegiate Athletics Union champions, the University of Victoria Vikings. This was a significant weekend series for the Dinos because a sweep would have put them in very good shape for the close of the regular season. Unfortunately, Calgary was terribly outplayed in the first half of Friday’s game, and only scored 16 points. The Dinos could not close the gap and fell 53-46 to the fourth-ranked Vikes.

On Saturday, the Vikes. were no match for the lady Dinos. Calgary jumped out to a quick lead in the first half and never looked back, taking a convincing 67-49 victory.

Natalie Hudec was huge for the Dinos in their loss Friday night, scoring 12 points and dishing out eight dimes, while Leighann Doan came through for Head Coach Shawnee Harle in game two scoring 19 points and ripping down 14 boards. The split brings the Dinos record to 14-6.

The Dinos remain the sixth seed in the country but this is deceiving. The Dinos have beaten every team in the top five at least once, except Laval. A National Championship berth is definitely not out of sight for Calgary as they sit in second place in the Canada West Conference.
