Hockey men second in Canada

Four games into the regular season, the Dinos are off to a roaring start. Calgary said thanks for coming out to the Regina Cougars as they sent them home empty handed after a pair of wins on the weekend.

Canada West Hockey Player of the Week Aaron Baker didn’t want to relinquish his title, and he didn’t have to. After blocking 43 of 45 shots faced this weekend and winning in both his starts, he was once again named Player of the Week.

How could anyone argue with the choice after looking at Baker’s numbers on the year? In his third season with the club, he has a 3-0-1 record to go along with his stunning 0.98 goals against average.

“He’s been great,” said Head Coach Scott Atkinson. “He’s giving our defence lots of confidence.”

Baker certainly has been great this season, however, he has had plenty of help due to a strong commitment to team defence, and a powerful offense. The line combination of Sean Robertson, Ken McKay, and Jason Boyd was firing on all cylinders all weekend. The trio notched three goals and seven of the points scored against the Cougars. Boyd scored once on Friday, and McKay added a pair in Saturday’s match.

The Cougars proved to be little match in the home opener on Friday night. The tight checking Dinos won most of the one-on-one battles for the puck and received a wealth of goal scoring in cruising to a 5-0 victory. Saturday’s game was a different story though, as the Cougars seemed to find their road legs. However the good guys battled hard and prevailed as the home squad stood their ground in a tight 3-2 finish.

The team has this weekend off to prepare for their next match against Lethbridge on Nov. 1.
