Brassmunk, Dark Sunrise

Over the past decade Canadian hip hop has exploded. Once the domain of MCs south of the border, major urban centres in the Great White North are starting to make their presence felt, with a plethora of different styles, sounds and markets emerging almost daily.

One such emerging crew is Toronto’s Brassmunk, fresh off from opening for Snoop on his Canadian tour. Their new EP, Dark Sunrise, cuts a large swath across all their styles, from the smart, sharp, disjointed beats of “Whistle While you Work” to the summer cruisin’, head bobbin’ simple beats of “Oh Supaman.”

They’re not redefining the genre but they are among the best of a young, up and coming Canadian scene and well worth a listen.
