Facing Lethbridge has always been a gold mine for the Dinos. Last weekend was no different with the women’s soccer team improving their record to 2-1-1 with two wins.
Stephanie Hoogveld had a pair of goals in Saturday’s game on Dino turf. She started off by burying one in the first 10 minutes of play then scored again later in the first half. Megan Dourado rounded off the first half scoring with a nice shot from the edge of the penalty area.
The second half wasn’t nearly as exciting, as neither team scored, leaving the game 3-0. Dinos keeper Charlotte Sullivan also recorded her first shutout of the season.
"We managed to throw in our shots in the first half but we just aren’t a second half team," commented Jessica Horning after Saturday’s game.
A different story unfolded Sunday in Lethbridge with the Pronghorns leading 1-0 after the first half. The lady Dinos came out in the second half energized, and managed to pull off the 4-2 win. Joan Hall, Susan Wandler, Catherine Alcock and Hoogveld each put one in the net in the second half.
Even though they gave up two wins on the weekend, Lethbridge will still get the last laugh by getting a berth at the Canada West playoffs by hosting the event, leaving only three other spots left to fill.
The women’s soccer team starts a seven-game home stand Sat., Sept. 27 when they play the second-place University of Victoria Vikes, then the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds the next day.
"This weekend is going to be tough," explained sweeper Danielle Harris. "But if we continue to keep playing with heart, we have a pretty good chance of doing well."
