Caught up in the day in, day out of university life, it isn’t common to step back and put things in perspective. All too often, it is the result of extraordinary, sometimes tragic, circumstances.
Sadly, this is one of those times.
At approximately 9 p.m. on Tue., Sept. 30, the University of Calgary lost two of its own. Brian Collins, a fifth-year Social Science student, and Joah Atkinson, a third-year Communication and Culture student, were involved in a vehicle-pedestrian collision while crossing 32 Ave. at 33 St. NW, just north of campus. Both have since passed away due to their injuries.
The students were reportedly in the crosswalk at the time of the collision.
The pair were both actively involved in the U of C Rugby Club. In fact, they were returning home from a UCRC executive meeting at the time of the accident.
"We’re horrified by the accident, and extend our sincerest condolences to the pair’s family, friends, faculties and to all students. It has hit the university incredibly hard," stated a sombre Beth Frank, U of C Director of Communications. "In the coming days we will be in touch with the families and will be respecting their wishes. Once we have spoken with them we will act accordingly."
As of press time, the investigation is still ongoing, and no details have been released by Calgary Police Services, other than no charges have been laid at this time. They also say alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
