Changing marriage

By Carl Leonhardt

Editor, the Gauntlet,

The first thing that I would like to say is I regularly read the Gauntlet and enjoy it. However, despite the professions of acceptance of others ideas and opinions and their right to have and profess them, the paper seems to have an ultra-leftist spin on it with little other right or even moderate views to balance it out.

You might call this a test, a time to put your money where your mouth is.

Despite fears of being called a bigot, I do not believe in gay marriage. That is not to say that I am against a gay union however. I may not believe in it but I do believe in the right of others to do whatever they want as long as they do not infringe on the rights of others.

I believe the core problem with gay marriage is that marriage is held sacred by many different religious institutions and is, by definition, the union of one man and one woman. It is a cornerstone of many religious beliefs. When you try to change it how could you expect anything but a negative reaction.

Everywhere around the world, every day, people are dying for their beliefs. Trying to change something held so sacred is an attack, and a useless one at that.

If gay people want to enter into a union with all the same legal rights as marriage then as far as I am concerned they should be able too, that is not the point I am arguing. My point is that "marriage" is the name for a union between a man and a woman.

Religious institutions have held it to the core of their beliefs for hundreds of years and to try and change it in a never ending search for equality in every conceivable way is selfish.
