Hitting the pow-pow

By Russ Dyck

Need a way to forget about those exams from hell coming up, and waste a bit of time in the process? Hit the slopes for a day or two… or four.

Lake Louise and Sunshine are open with spectacular pow-pow nar-nar–and I say this from experience on Sun., Nov. 30. Fortress is scheduled to open Fri., Dec. 12 with an updated lift system. Resorts of the Canadian Rockies decided to update the lifts after almost closing the resort this season due to higher power and insurance costs. But fans of the resort spoke loud and clear, making sure Fortress is around for a while longer.

So skiers and snowboarders alike, take some ‘you time.’ Treat yourselves to a couple days of playing in the snow before exams, and a lot more after you’re done.

And to all those who hurt their knees over the non-winter break, I laugh in your face.

Speed Skating

Canada had some top-placing skaters this past weekend. There are too many to name them all, so we’ll mention the most important of the bunch. University of Calgary student and Gauntlet volunteer Chelsey Parker finished fourth in the women’s 1000m All Around Short competition. Kudos.

The speed skating experience happens again this weekend at the Oval with the World Cup Long Track.

Wrestling

The Dinos wrestling team once again flexed their beefy arms, but this time they moved northernly to the Husky Open at the University of Saskatchewan.

The women’s team dominated their categories, taking top spot overall. Dinos Brit Laverdure and Laura McDougall were each number one in their weight divisions while Andrea Ross took second place in her’s.

The men walked away with third spot overall, just behind the University of Regina Cougars, while the Huskies conquered their own open tournament–some hosts they are.

Joe Bentley and Tony Baldwin were the top guns in their weight divisions while Beamer Comfort and Huy Nguyen settled for second in their divisions. The Dinos have the winter break off to beef-up and get ready for the Golden Bear Open in Edmonton Jan. 9-10.
