Meditations on sporting activites

By Russ Dyck

Taryn Swiatek, the former University of Calgary women’s soccer team goalie (from 1999-2001), was awarded the Booster Club’s Henry Viney Trophy for Female Athlete of the Year Tue., Mar. 16. Swiatek helped the Canadian women’s World Cup team reach the semi-finals during last year’s tournament with her steady hands as keeper. This was a huge achievement for Canada, since in previous World Cup appearances, neither the men’s nor the women’s team won a single game. Swiatek now joins the ranks of Kerrin Lee-Gartner and Catriona LeMay Doan in receiving this prestigious honour.

Roughneck Tickets
Here’s your chance to see the Calgary Roughnecks take on powerhouse Colorado Mammoth live at the Saddledome Sun., Mar. 21. Just head up to MSC 319 and claim one of two pairs of tickets to watch as the best in the west battle head-to-head–you can even bring that special little leprechaun you caught Wednesday night.

Flames? Playoffs? Whaaa?
The Calgary Flames are well on their way to a playoff berth, their first since 1995. After the initial shock subsides, a warm, fuzzy feeling will set in. Don’t be afraid, that’s what happens when you drink three pints a period.

Go Flames!
