Wrestler bronzed at Worlds
U of C Dinos wrestler Breanne Graham added to her medal collection at last week’s World University Wrestling Championships in Poland. Graham trumped competitors from China, Japan and Taiwan but lost to the eventual gold medallist, American grappler Marcie Van Dusen, in regular competition in the 59 kg division. In her final match, Graham defeated a Polish wrestler to win the Bronze medal.
Scrum of the Earth
U of C Rugby players Laura Stoughton and Leigh-Anne Swayne will join ten other top Canadian players to represent Canada at the FISU World University Games. The First World University Rugby 7 on 7 Championship will be hosted in Beijing, China, from Sept. 15-19, 2004. University of Alberta Pandas Rugby players Kate Hamilton and Jillian Martin were also named to the national squad for the tournament.
Gold in the pool
Dinos’ swimmer Erin Gammel took third place in the 100m backstroke at the Janet Evans Invitat- ional swimming competition this weekend.
Gammel’s final heat result of 1:02.86 was just over two seconds behind American and world record holder Nathalie Coughlin’s result of 1:00.80. Fellow American Cope Haley came in second with a time of 1:01.96.
At the same competition, Calgary’s Lauren Van Oosten ranked seventh in the women’s 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:12.24, almost four seconds behind Kirk Tara from the US.
Separately, Dino Joanna Malar took bronze at the third stop on the Mare Nostrum swimming Circuit in Barcelona last Thu., June 10. Her time of 4:48.35 for the 400m individual medley was six seconds shy of Romanian Yana Klochkova’s 4:42.12.
In the week prior, Rick Say took gold for 200m freestyle on the circuit’s second stop in Canet, France with a time of 1:48.67. On Sun. June 12, Say placed eighth in the 200m freestyle.
Victorians victorious
Calgary’s Malindi Elmore took second place in the women’s 800m with a time of 2:02.69 at last Friday’s Victoria International Track Classic. Victoria’s Katie Vermeulen and Aimee Teteris rounded out the medal places with times of 2:02.31 and 2:03.61, respectively.
Duffersaurs humbled by Humber
For the second year in a row, the U of C Dinos’ men’s golf team competed in the Canadian University/College Championships in Hornby, Ontario in early June. The team finished 13th this year. The five-member team included Kevin Kerr, Brad McMillan, Sam Sharma, Trevor Slaughter and James Wong, who scored a combined total of 955 over 54 holes each. Humber College came out on top, shooting a combined total of 905, and Mount Royal College placed eleventh with a score of 949.
Dinos pass on golden shower
The football Dinos announced their 2004 schedule this week. Breaking many years of tradition, they will not play a home game against the University of Alberta Golden Bears. The Dinos will only have one chance to trounce their competitors up north on Sat., Oct. 2 at Foote Field to end the first half of the regular season.
The unbalanced schedule, where the Dinos play some teams twice and others only once, was due to the addition of Simon Fraser University to Canada West two years ago, resulting in an odd number of teams in the conference. The complete schedule is at: www.godinos.com.
