Christening virgin turf

By John Fisher

“Well, at least it’s not snowing,” remarked Dinos women’s soccer Head Coach Robin Slot as his girls took to the field Sept. 14 for a preseason game against the Mount Royal College Cougars. The pounding wind and cold rain didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of the girls as they prepared for the game and for a new season.

With 12 remaining veterans, Slot feels his team has gained much needed experience from last year and picked up some very promising young talent, adding to an already deep roster. Slot also predicts a playoff berth in Vancouver this upcoming year. This coming from a very well tenured and respected coach means high hopes for our favourite Dinettes after missing last year’s playoffs. However, the rest of the Canada West league looks as strong as ever. Many of last year’s teams will be fighting for a limited number of playoff spots.

Breaking the playoff threshold will depend on the leadership of veterans Megan Dourado and Joan Hall as the team’s two captains this upcoming year, along with key players such as Jessica Horning. The return of Erin Ramsay to the defence after a staggering injury should also be an excellent shot in the arm to an already tight squad.

The Dinettes are also welcoming the new field (in between the new Alberta Childrens Hospital and the existing fields) as their turf for this year’s six home games. Don’t miss their doubleheader christening of the new fields this weekend on Sat., Sept. 18 at noon against the University of Saskatechewan’s Husky women and Sun., Sept. 19 at noon against the Pandas from our very favourite rival, the University of Alberta!
