Debates hit the U of C

By John Leung Chung-Yin

The Science Theatres will be filled with persuasive arguments between February 4-6, as the 75th annual A.G. McGoun Cup debate tournament plays out here on the University of Calgary campus.

Speech and debate teams from seven universities and colleges across western Canada, including the University of British Columbia, the University of Alberta and Athabasca University, will take part in this storied tournament to crown the Western Canadian royalty of speech and debate.

Throughout the weekend, there will be round after round of stimulating debate and passionate speeches as teams from the U of C’s own Speech and Debate Society will try to outwit and out debate their western Canadian opponents through the round-robin tournament. Beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, teams will work to make their way into the playoff rounds on Sunday, where the final debate will crown the new western Canadian champion Sunday at 1:15 p.m.

The debates are free to the public.
