The University of Calgary is advising all staff, faculty and students that a male graduate student enrolled since 2003 has a past criminal record as a pedophile.
U of C administration were informed of the student’s criminal record by Calgary City Police in February, according to a media advisory issued by U of C External Relations. A further mass email was sent to campus members by U of C Provost and Vice-President Academic Dr. Ron Bond.
“These are not easy matters to deal with but I want to assure you that our decision-making at all times placed children’s safety and security as our first priority,” wrote Bond in the email, sent Fri., Jun. 10.
Administration held multiple meetings with the student, Campus Security, Calgary police, the department head and dean of the faculty in order to assess which actions would be taken.
According to the advisory, the student must stay 100 yards from the Child Care Centre at all times and is not permitted to be alone or in the company of any child under 16 years of age. Further, the student must avoid any situations on campus where children are known or likely to be present.
The terms, agreed upon between the student and his dean, include the stipulation that conditions of the student’s probation must be met.
A photo of the student has been circulated to staff at the Child Care Centre as well as all Campus Security personnel.
Under the Provincial Freedom of Information and the Protection of Privacy Act the student cannot be named, but Bond stressed in the email that the student has been on-campus without incident since 2003.
U of C administration and Campus Security refused further comment.
