The voice of the people has spoken, electing three new members of the student government in last week’s Students’ Union by-election.

In the race to fill the vacant Academic Commissioner position on the Students’ Legislative Council, Adam Daly defeated his closest rival Dalmy Baez by a 29-vote margin, 286 to 257, with Richard Rawnsley running a distant third with 129 votes.

In the two faculty representative races, Laura Lillian came away the victor in the Communications and Culture race by defeating two other challengers Christina Irene Paul Rontynen and Parm Grewal 38-22-17, respectively. In the Faculty of Science representative race, Fatima Nasser defeated her rival Aamir Bharmal by a 38-vote margin to the tune of 155 to 117.

Overall voter turnout was 835 people, which, according to Chief Returning Officer Mike Brown, is average for an SU by-election.

“I have received no complaints, and I have none against any candidates,” said Brown.
