Students get politically active

By Emily Senger

Students should stop complaining and start acting.

This is the message the Students’ Union wants to convey with its second annual Political Action Week, running Oct. 24-28. The week features daily events with speakers, debate and discussion about how students can get involved in the political world around them.

“All the workshops are focused on people being active in what they believe in, not just talking about it with your friends,” explained SU Vice-President External Jen Smith.

PAW will feature a political speaker or debate each noon-hour and free movie screenings in That Empty Space in the afternoons. An activist workshop is scheduled for Wed., Oct. 26 to teach budding young grassroots activists the dos and don’ts of protest.

“It’s not a bad thing to contact your MLA or contact Harvey Weingarten,” said Smith. “They’re not going to put a black mark by your name or anything.”

Noted speakers for the week include MacLean’s columnist Paul Wells and Joel Bakan, author of the book The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power and the 2003 film The Corporation.
