SU byelection announced


On Thursday, the Students’ Union announced the candidates for the upcoming SU byelection. Voting will take place from Oct. 21-23. Students can vote online through their myUofC accounts or at a polling station. Four positions were acclaimed. Teresa Green, Daniel Pagan, Carrie Liu and Melissa Tannahill will be the faculty representatives for education, humanities, nursing and veterinary medicine respectively. There are two open academic commissioner positions, one event commissioner position, two operations and finance commissioner positions and one faculty represen- tative for science position.





North Korea allows inspectors


United Nations inspectors regained access to North Korea’s Yongbyon nuclear plant this week after the United States removed North Korea from a list of nations that sponsor terrorism. North Korea had recently restarted enrichment activity at the Yongbyon facility after stating the U.S. failed to live up to its side of the nuclear agreement reached last year. The agreement promised aid and improved relations in exchange for disarmament. The agreement is back on track as International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors are being let back in to re-evaluate.





Zimbabwe’s power breakdown


Zimbabwe’s opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai threatened to withdraw from the power sharing agreement negotiated by outgoing South African President Thabo Mbeki. Tsvangirai is upset because Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe awarded most of the government’s important positions to members of his own party, Zanu-PF. Tsvangirai insisted that this arrangement is in breach of the power sharing agreement and will pull out unless his party is allowed either the ministry of defence or the department of home affairs. Mbeki arrived in Zimbabwe to help salvage the agreement.





Grad students present petition


The University of Calgary Graduate Students’ Association recently sent their petition signed by about 800 students to the Canadian Federation of Students, a group that lobbies the federal government on the behalf of Canadian students. The GSA argued CFS failed to provide adequate representation for students and universities in the west and that they could do a better job themselves. A referendum will take place in April and will decided if U of C’s graduate students will continue to be represented by the Cfs.
