Letter: intramural violence

By Gram Lawn

Editor, the Gauntlet,

I recently witnessed a bench-clearing brawl during an intramural basketball game in the Jack Simpson Gymnasium. It took the poor referees three tries to calm things down. I had never seen anything like it before in a lifetime of sports participation. Ironically, I had just been thinking that intramural basketball didn’t seem too aggressive. Unfortunately, I also witnessed and experienced several fights and acts of aggression as a participant in this fall’s co-ed intramural soccer league. Friends of mine who have played in the U of C’s intramural hockey leagues report that similar incidents routinely occur. How ridiculous! Let’s all remember (and remind our teammates) that these are intramural leagues that are just for fun, leave our egos at home and respect our fellow players and referees.
