Men’s soccer heads to playoffs after win

By Douglas Long

It was a busy weekend for both of the University of Calgary soccer teams as the men’s and women’s squads finished off their regular seasons. The men were assured a post-season berth after beating the University of Fraser Valley 2-1 on Oct. 30. The win guaranteed the Dinos a third place finish in the CIS West with a 8-4-2 record. They wrapped up their last game of the season with a loss against Victoria 2-1 in a game that had no bearing on their final standing.

The Dinos women were looking to beat the Fraser Valley Cascades in order to guarantee themselves a spot in the post-season but suffered a devastating 3-1 defeat on Oct. 30 which crushed their playoff hopes. The team then travelled to Victoria in style, finishing the season off with a 3-2 win over the University of Victoria Vikes. The women’s Dinos finished the season in sixth place with a 6-5-3 record. On another note, Dinos forward Tessa Miller led the league in overall points, points per game, assists and assists per game in an outstanding season.

The Dino men’s soccer team has a playoff date versus the second place UBC Thunderbirds in Edmonton on Nov. 6 at 2:15 p.m.

The men’s Dinos have had an impressive, undefeated season at home. If the Dinos can pull off a win this weekend, they will play either Alberta or Saskatchewan for the CIS West Championship.
