The University of Calgary lost a loved and valued member of their family Mon, Apr. 5 when longtime women’s soccer coach Gord Ramsay lost a battle with cancer.

The 60-year-old assistant to Head Coach Robin Slot had been with the program for a decade, seeing some considerable successes in that time, most notably the 1998 national championship.

Widely respected throughout the Alberta soccer community, Ramsay coached at various age levels and headed a number of Alberta provincial women’s teams. His dedication and passion for the game and his players will be carried on for many years to come by the various athletes who had the pleasure of learning the game from him.

More than simply a gifted coach, Ramsay was an outstanding person, who touched everyone who met him.

"He brought enthusiasm, knowledge and commitment to the team and the athletes knew that everyday," said U of C Athletic Director Don Wilson. "He will be missed by the team and by soccer in this city."

Ramsay is survived by his wife Molly, two children and four grandchildren.
