It’s still nice to win

By Lawrence Bailey

When there’s nothing to prove and nothing on the line, it’s sometimes tough to give a damn. Then again, when there’s no chance in hell you’re going to lose, you can have fun with the situation.

So it went at Foothills Stadium Oct. 11-12 as the Dinos mens soccer squad hosted a pair of exhibition tilts with the University of Regina Cougars, a club team. While the Cougars’ women’s program is a part of Canada West, the men’s squad is not as fortunate–but they still accompany their ladies on the road, preparing for the day when they too are welcomed into the fold.

As the matches were exhibition, it gave the Dinos and their Head Coach Andy Gibbs a chance to have fun while evaluating some young talent. Gibbs actually took the weekend off, turning the coaching reins over to his assistant Lothar Schmidt, who sent a very young squad out to take on the Cougars, barring a few vets including former Canada West All-Star Luis Morales.

The Dinos did what they were supposed to, taking both games handily (3-0 on Saturday and 3-1 on Sunday) and gaining valuable experience for the kids who are the program’s future.

The Dinos (4-4-0) get back down to business Sun., Oct. 19 as they play their final home game of the season, hosting the Trinity Western University Spartans (5-2-1).
