President White becomes Sugar Daddy

By Jane Alkhouri

Treats with Toby is here. Much like Cookies with Cleary and Slurpees on South, you go to the Students’ Union President’s office (located in the old clubs area in MacHall 209) on Mondays from 1-2 p.m., Thursdays from 2-3 p.m. or Fridays from 10-11 a.m. Once there, you will be able to meet with the SU president and get treats! Not a bad deal, eh?

OK, so there is a mini catch… but it’s a good one. Toby wants to meet with you, yes, you. The tuition decision is scheduled for Feb. 2, 2001. That’s the Board of Governors meeting where they decide how much our tuition will be raised for the next academic year. Yep, that meeting. Before going into that meeting, students should be consulted on what they would like the SU to do. So, by going to get those treats from Toby (and you should because he’s got lots), he’s hoping to get some feedback from you.

What else is happening in SU land that you should be aware of? After you read the TLFs (and this story of course) you should take a look at the supplement insert inside the Gauntlet. It’s the SU’s election supplement. We formulated questions and sent them out to all the candidates running in Calgary and surrounding areas. We got most of them back and some rather interesting responses. If you are an undecided voter you should take a look at this, in addition to other documents that may help you make a decision. Most of our questions to the candidates involved post-secondary education issues.

And if you haven’t had enough of the cheesy Elections Canada commercials telling you to vote here’s another reminder. Please go out and VOTE. More than 1.2 million Canadians turned 18 since the last federal election and are now eligible to vote. That is a HUGE number. If you don’t know where to vote please check out the elections Canada Web site at www.elections.ca or call 1-800-INFO-VOTE (1-800-463-6868).

Remember, you can’t bitch about the way things are if you’ve never even bothered trying to make a difference by voting. Back to the headline. OK, so maybe Toby White is not a sugar daddy but how else was I going to get you to read a story about tuition and voting? If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me at agd@canada.com or call me at the commissioners’ office at 220-3913.
