You’re either reading this because it’s BSD, the Gauntlet has come out and you are drunk, or you are procrastinating and decided to read the Gauntlet in its entirety or you just love my writing… maybe not.
So what happened this year? The hostage brain came to campus as part of the CASA federal lobby campaign for 2000/01, expansion finally begun, the Prime Minister called a fall election, the first annual Snow Pants Day was held on Dec. 8, 2000, we got a tuition increase (bad) but we managed to make it the lowest in 13 years (not as bad), a provincial election was called, an SU general election took place, Toby White and Duncan Wojtaszek stole and lost my mittens in Ottawa, and now students may be allowed to vote on Faculty Promotions Committees. Many others things happened but I only have so much space…
I encourage you all to check out the SU’s Web site at: http://www.su.ucalgary.ca. The SU offers many services to students that you should be aware and take advantage of. Also keep in mind that if you have a concern about something you should meet with the President of the SU. In order to encourage students to attend office hours with the Pres there usually is an offer of "goodies", "Cookies with Cleary", "Slurpees on South," and now "Treats with Toby."
And on a personal non-SU note, one of our fellow students, Michael Lang, a Ph.D. student, has been diagnosed with leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. Someone brought his case to my attention because it was mentioned in the Calgary Herald. Deciding to be added to the donor list is a big decision and it’s not for everyone.
However it can save a life. I lost someone very close to me to leukemia three months ago and wish so much that we could have found a match. So if you are interested or have any questions please check out http://www.bloodservices.ca/english/ubmdr/roadmap.html or call: 1-877-366-6717. Thank you.
To everyone I wish you a happy BSD, happy studying, and a happy summer! I can be reached at: agd@canada.com.
