Not unlike a wounded beast, the University of Calgary men’s soccer-saurs are an angry lot. After and 0-3 start, the boys’ six consecutive victories have them thirsting for blood, riding a high and daring teams to take them on.
“We’re making a statement, we’re here to play,” said Dinos midfielder, Canada West player of the week and latest offensive star Luis “Scarface” Morales. “Nobody wants to play us right now. Who wants to play a team who’ve won six straight?”
After tallying four straight wins heading into their games at home Oct. 20-21, the Dinos drubbed both Trinity Western University and the University of Lethbridge by identical 3-1 margins. The star of the weekend was the diminutive yet speedy Morales who notched the first goal against Trinity and the game winner against Lethbridge.
“We’re scoring nice goals now, not garbage ones,” said Morales. “We’re really starting to display our skill.”
From the opening kick both games saw the soccersaurs jump all over their opponents, bury them early and never let them recover. Scoring in the opening 20 minutes of any game definitely sets the tone and a 2-0 lead after six minutes in the duel with Lethbridge left the Pronghorns looking more deflated than usual.
While the weekend victories came over the teams sharing the Canada West basement, six points is six points and it sets the boys up nicely for a pivotal and unfriendly West Coast road trip.
“The big victory against U of A solidified the fact that we can beat the best teams in Canada,” explained midfielder extraordinaire Jon Yumol. “Now that we only need three or four points to secure second place, there’s a lot less pressure than there could have been.”
That said, nothing is guaranteed and the boys can’t let up. With three games in four days against powerhouses University of British Columbia, University of Victoria and the new kid on the block TWU, the road to the Canada West playoffs won’t be an easy one.
“We have it in our minds that we can win,” said a confident Morales. “Nobody’s even thinking about losing.”
G-G-G-Goal Notes:
The two party system is dead. A motley crew of rebels called La Familia have undermined the hegemonic control of the Tigers and the D.P.A. Led by ruthless kingpin Luis “Sacrface” Morales and enlisting the services of hired guns like “RĂ©al” David Hernandez, these upstarts are rumoured to be working on an affiliation with the D.P.A.
News of the new crew and their plans of conquest spread quickly, prompting midfielder and old school Tiger Brian Newmarch to declare: “They can’t take down
the Tigers!”
Final score: La Familia-3, Tigers-2, D.P.A.-1
