You can’t win ‘em all

Mick Jagger said “you can’t always get what you want,” which proved to be all too true for the Dinos men’s basketball team in Lethbridge last Friday night.

The Dinos lagged behind the U of L Pronghorns by 21 points until a thrilling fourth quarter comeback brought the score to within a single point of the ‘Horns in a mere four minutes. However, the men were unable to pull ahead and suffered a humiliating and devestating loss.

“We just shot the ball poorly,” said Head Coach Dan Vanhooren of the game’s first three quarters. “Lethbridge hit some tough shots. Then in about a four minute stretch, we made up all the points.”

Unfortunately the Dinos were not able to complete the game with a victory, losing 76-78.

“I don’t know if you can call it a comeback,” lamented guard Whit Hornsberger. “We didn’t finish it off–we should have won.”

Saturday’s result was more favourable, with the Dinos winning 89-81. The Pronghorns were outplayed in both halves, although four of their players scored in the double-digits.

“We had a greater sense of urgency on Saturday,” said Hornsberger. “We were on a four-game losing streak going into the weekend, and we didn’t want that number to get any higher.”

Dino scoring was led by Hornsberger, John Riad and Chris Wright. Riad racked up 23 points both nights, with Hornsberger scoring 24 on Saturday and Wright totalling 32 over the weekend. For the Pronghorns Alan Spoonhunter netted a weekend total of 39, followed by Darcy Day Chief with 33.

Surinder Grewal was an injury scratch for both games, but will return to the court when the Dinos take on the University of  Regina Jan. 24-25.
