Three times unlucky

The Dinos football squad paid a visit to Edmonton last weekend for a date with arch-rivals, the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Calgary was the victor in week one of the regular season with a dramatic come-from-behind 31-30 victory over the U of A on home turf. The Dinos have been slipping lately however, dropping their last two games after a 3-0 start. The Bears have gone in the opposite direction, with success after a slow start. Unfortunately, the Dinos’ losing skid was extended as the Bears romped to a 39-22 triumph Sat., Oct. 11.


Golden Bears running back Jarred Winkel has been extremely hot this season and this game was no exception. Winkel was handed the ball 26 times, stomping his way to 176 yards. He also scored two touchdowns in the process.


The Bears’ running game and Dinos’ turnovers were the story after the visitors jumped out to a quick 7-0 start courtesy running back Aneel Brar. Brar and fellow back Jeff Williams have been positives for the Dinos lately, as they improve from game to game.


Dinos quarterback Charles Guedo proved he’s not afraid to move the yardsticks himself, rushing for 31 yards on seven carries. However, Guedo also threw two interceptions and was sacked four times by the Bears, highlighting weaknesses on the offensive line. Guedo also managed to pass for 194 yards, but the Dinos need more from him if they want to win more games.


The defense let the Bears into field goal range far too often, as U of A kicker Mark Wojcichowksy’s name was plastered all over the score sheet. Add those points to Winkel’s two touchdowns and an unforgivable 60-yard punt return from the speedy Kendall Jeske and the coffin was nailed shut for the Dinos.


This weekend, the Dinos host the blundering, winless University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. Hopefully, Guedo and Co. can get back on track and finish strong heading the Canada West playoffs.
