Driver charged in accident

Charges have been laid in the fatal traffic accident that claimed the lives of University of Calgary students Joah Atkinson and Brian Collins.


Shortly after 9 p.m. on Sept. 30, Atkinson and Collins were returning from a U of C Rugby Club executive meeting when they were struck by a westbound Ford Aerostar while crossing 32 Ave. at 33 St.


An Calgary Police Service investigation wrapped up nearly a month later, and charges were laid Thu., Oct. 23. Sandra Evans, a 44-year-old northwest Calgary resident, has been charged with careless driving and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.


The investigation also determined Atkinson and Collins were in the crosswalk when the van struck them. The vehicle did not appear to have braked prior to the collision.


Evans is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 23, 2003.
