Volleysaurs gain trust and win

By Dale Miller

The Dinos men’s volleyball team skinned, tanned and mounted the University of Regina Cougars in two consecutive matches Feb. 6-7.

The Dinos kicked the weekend off right with a heartening 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 26-24) win Friday. Saturday’s match was closer, with the flatland felines briefly flashing their claws in the first and second games only to be ripped apart by the Dinos ferocious incisors in the third, rounding out the weekend 3-0 (25-21, 28-26, 25-13).

The Cougars may be in last place in Canada West, but given their level of talent, this win is still a victory.

"We were more relaxed and had more fun when we played," commented Dino middle Steve Brand on their victory.

"More trust," said Head Coach Greg Ryan, summing up Brand’s comment and addressing an issue the team’s been battling all season.

A lack of trust isn’t the only thing hurting the Dinos. The volleysaurs have also had problems with their serving–a problem showcased by 17 service errors Saturday.

"Six of the service errors were Sean Kendal’s," explained Ryan. "This arises from an injury he got playing against UBC–he won’t be spike serving next weekend."

A successful performance for the Dinos Feb. 13-14 against the Trinity Western University Spartans could see them join their female counterparts in the playoffs.

"All we have to do is win two more matches," proclaimed Ryan of the Dinos’ playoff chances. "This weekend we’re going to go out and extend our season."
