Hunt for gold October

By Sean Nyilassy

While most Dinos teams have not yet begun their seasons, the University of Calgary women’s fastball team is as near finished as your freedom from midterms. They played their final regular season games Sat., Oct. 1 in Lethbridge.

Now, Lethbridge, being slightly inferior to Calgary, built its fences nearer to the batter. Down there, this boosts the confidence of local baseball athletes. For our ladies, already confident from winning all season, it turned the weekend into a home run derby.

In the first game of the day against the home-diamond disadvantaged University of Lethbridge, Sarah Elliot, Theresa Manaloto and Caity Hevey flew the fence for the U of C. Our ladies added seven batted-in runs while allowing two, for a 10-2 ravishing.

The stubborn U of L ladies stepped up to the plate for another serving of losing. This time, Hevey and Megan Woods knocked the ball out of the park for homers.

Lethbridge can take slight comfort in the game though; they improved. I suppose a 9-2 loss doesn’t hurt quite as bad. Our ladies enjoyed dishing the punishment though–each of them had a base hit both games.

The final game for the U of C was against the Mount Royal College team that stole their undefeated tournament the previous weekend. Things were again not made easy. The lead went back and forth between the teams like Quagmire between twins with big ‘pitching mounds’ and no self-respect.

Despite only one home run, from Manaloto, to MRC’s two, our ladies had what it took and won the game 13-9. Thus ends a perfect weekend–one they hope to repeat at home Oct. 8-9 when they host the Alberta Intercollegiate Women’s Fastball Association Playoffs.

These three games boost their win total to the number of days in two weeks, while they have suffered the same number of losses as the number of times Dorothy had to say “there’s no place like home” to go back to Kansas and forfeited the same number of games as Vincent van Gogh had ears.

Come out to Huntington Hills baseball diamonds at 78th Avenue and Centre Street to watch our winning ladies in some fast ball and great base running. They play at 11:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sat., Oct. 8 with tie-breaker and championship games beginning at 11:30 a.m. Sun., Oct. 9.

If the post-season plays out like the regular season has, the U of C will have something to celebrate following their games.
