A reservoir row-off… only in the prairies

By Arcot Ramathorn

The Dinos rowing crew took to the Glenmore Reservoir as hosts of this season’s edition of the Prairie University Championship Sat., Oct. 15.

Held in conjunction with the annual Head of the Weasel race, the Prairie Champs saw athletes from the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary go head-to-head for land-locked water supremacy and bragging rights heading into the last two weeks of the fall regatta schedule.

In all, it was a successful outing for the Dinos. Jenna Nodding took the gold in the lightweight women’s single, with teammate Andrea Bundon placing a close second. Jarid MacKenzie finished third in the open men’s single by a scant three-second margin and Alissa Krakowski and Carly McKay finished second in the open women’s pair event.

After flying down the course in the 1500m sprint events, the crew regrouped and launched in the Head of the Weasel race, a 4.5km circuit pitting the U of C against entries from the Edmonton, Saskatoon, Lakeland and Calgary rowing clubs, as well as their U of A rivals. The team showed well overall, with Scott McKean taking first place in the LM single category and the crew of Nicole Sewall, Karen Bernhardt, Krakowski and McKay winning the OW quad event.

Next for the Dinos is a trip to Victoria, where they will compete in both the Head of the Gorge and Head of the Elk races Oct. 29-30. Facing the rowing powerhouses from the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria, the Dinos are looking to finish well, but are mostly just looking forward to sunshine on the West coast.
