Aquasaurs return from championships triumphant

The Dinos swimmers are back from the Canadian Interuniversity Sport swimming championships in Halifax and have something to celebrate.

Both men’s and women’s teams finished in a strong second at the end of the weekend, standing at 613.5 and 647 points, respectively. They closely trailed the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds who won their 10th straight victory on both sides. Home team Dalhousie finished the championships in third on the men’s side and 13th on the women’s.

Calgary swept the women’s individual honors as Erin Gammel was honoured for the second time with female swimmer of the year, while Kevyn Peterson claimed female rookie of the year. Gammel is in her fifth year of CIS eligibility, making the award a great way to end her CIS career. Coach Mike Blondal was also honoured as female coach of the year.

Overall, the Dinos were very pleased with the outcome of the weekend.

“We did a really good job,” said Dinos swimmer Dan Langlois. “We put our best effort forward this weekend. We’ve never been that close before because usually [UBC] blows us out of the water. I definitely think that next year is ours.”
