Demand your money’s worth of the Board

By Name withheld

I have had the misfortune of being an undergraduate student at the University of Calgary for five long, and expensive years. During that time, I have witnessed tuition raise by a total of $990.

Perhaps I wouldn’t have an issue with this increase, had the quality of my education at this institution of "higher learning" raised proportionately with the increased fee. Sadly, it didn’t. My classes are still over-populated. My professors are still overworked. My classrooms are still decrepit (since I’m not in Management). The Library is still horrible. The University Bookstore, Parking Services, and Food Services (all run by the university) still abuse their financial power and charge outrageous prices. Sure, I may have access to a whole slew of swanky new computers in the Info Commons, but how can I write a research paper when our Library doesn’t have the material I need?

If the Board of Governors decides to raise tuition again this year (which it undoubtedly will), I demand a better education for the money I pay. If the university cannot provide me with better bang for my buck so to speak, then I demand that it freezes tuition.

Please come to the Board of Governors meeting on Fri., Feb. 4 to rally against another tuition hike. The meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. in the Dining Centre, however, as proven by the cowardly Board last year, the location is subject to change at the last minute for "safety concerns" (read: protesting students). As such, please meet in MacEwan Students’ Centre at 7:30 a.m. Make your voice heard. Demand affordable, quality education. After all, you’re the one paying for it.
