Weekend Update: Men’s Basketball

By Lawrence Bailey

They aren’t royalty and weren’t star gazing but the Dinos’ men’s basketball team rolled into Regina for a game Jan. 6 with their own timeless triumvirate. The Cougars fell like Jericho’s walls as our boys kicked off the second half of the Canada West season in style, exploding for 208 points over two games.

Led by a backcourt of biblical proportions and centre Chris Harris in the middle, they evened their record at 6-6. Calgary shot over 60 per cent from the floor, had big numbers up and down the bench and capitalized on Regina’s inability to cash in on their opportunities. Wes Jickling, Chris Harris, Andrew Strodeur and Richard Wiebach dominated the glass all weekend, collecting at least a dozen boards apiece (Wiebach also chipped in a T in each game for good measure).

The powers that be in the CIAU were watching our boys from on high this weekend, John Riad in particular. He got the nod for Canada West male athlete of the week, a reward for his 52 points in 53 minutes against those woeful cats from the prairies.

This weekend, Jan. 12-13, Dinos’ basketball history will be made at the Jack when they play Simon Fraser University (5-7) for the first time ever in league play. Tied with the University of Lethbridge for third in the conference, the Dinos will need another team effort like the one turned in against the Cougars last weekend to send them on their way towards a more fruitful second half.

side effect , people can take a signal. Will probably be back to get more.
    Thanks
