Wondering what women want?

By Esther E. Steeves

Since the beginning, humans have lived together in a society in which their very survival depends on the relationships that exist between men and women. While the world has obviously progressed as a result of successful male-female interaction, the fact remains that it is unlikely the genders gained such a relationship due to their thorough comprehension of significant others. While there are those who would claim such knowledge, for many men the question remains: What do women really want?

This question cannot be answered with a simple list of women’s desires due to the variety of women and their varying wants and needs. It may be sensible, therefore, to consider the more general question: What don’t women want?

Many times, figuring out what women don’t want can be as easy as figuring out what any normal person wouldn’t want, regardless of gender. However, it’s easy to overlook or ignore some of the most obvious things that women do not want because of the different values placed on desires depending on sex.

For example, although neither men nor women want to feel unattractive, it would seem that women in general are more sensitive when it comes to appearance, therefore the value women place on their appearance should be noted and taken into consideration. Women do not want to feel unattractive. The same rule can be applied to most things that men feel opposed to. Whether a woman dreams of attaining a high-profile job or learning to cook Asian food, women don’t want anyone to stand in the way of their dreams, in much the same way men do not want anyone to stand in the way of their dreams.

No woman wants to feel lonely, whether she enjoys a demanding social life or not. No woman wants to be misunderstood, and no woman wants to be mistrusted. Women do not want to be bullied or treated with a lack of patience. Women do not want to be subjected to destructive criticism, although many greatly appreciate criticism in constructive doses. Women do not want to be handled with insensitivity, or to be judged based on stereotypes. Women do not want to be physically harmed or played with emotionally.

Finally, as women do not consider themselves inferior to men, they do not want to be treated as the inferior sex. While this list is short and admittedly incomplete, it does provide some insight to the inner workings of the female mind–which, as it turns out, is not so different than that of a male. The difference is in where each gender places value. Women’s desires vary, as do women in general, but as can be seen from the above, discovering what women don’t want can more than obvious.
