Delgados, Hate

I dream of the day that pop as good as this plays on Top 40 radio. The Delgados’ newest release is intelligent pop bliss through all ten tracks. Vocalists Emma Pollock and Alun Woodward trade duties back and forth from song to song, keeping usual pop-band monotony out of play. Right from the opening distorted drum line of “The Light Before We Land,” the Delgado’s prove they know how to work the classic song-writing formula into smart tunes that can inspire in a radio-friendly time. A saucy cover of the Beatles “All You Need Is Hate” takes the cake for the album’s best tune, preaching the best anti-hate message I’ve ever heard. Those who hope that someday real music might beat out Nickelback or Nelly for Grammy nominations should check this out.
