Dinos hurt by injury

By Lee Bogle

Having just lost star player Jessica Foltinek, the University of Calgary women’s basketball team struggled against an up-and-coming University of Saskatchewan Huskies team Jan. 9-10 in Saskatoon. The Husky women overwhelmed the Dinos with their, uh, size.

"We struggled," commented Head Coach Shawnee Harle on the lackluster performance. "We need to learn to compete harder without Jess."

Friday night found the ladies out-competed by the Husky women. The Dinos fell behind early, and couldn’t make it back, losing 78-70.

‘Maundrell can credit her success to her spin-o-rama move, quickly becoming famous amongst the highest circles of basketball at this university. Not only does it dazzle defenders, it stupefies spectators and confounds coaches not donning the red and gold.

Alas, it wasn’t enough to sustain the Dinos on Saturday eve. Although Jade Jensen is only a sophomore, she helped the Dinos late in the first half, bringing them within a basket of the hosts at the break. But the charge was quickly stopped, and the team faltered for the rest of the game, getting trounced 76-58.

Tanya Hautala led the Dinos with 15 points, while Jensen and Maundrell finished with 11 apiece and Michelle Stiphout added six.

"We couldn’t pull through," Stiphout lamented. "Hopefully we’ll exact revenge when they come here."

The two teams clash at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium Feb. 13-14.

The girls are at home this weekend to tackle the #1 ranked University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and the #3 ranked University of Victoria Vikes. (Insert higher power here) help us all.
