A number of athletes and coaches from the University of Calgary are set to compete at the 2004 Summer Olympic games in Athens. The official announcement by the Canadian Olympic Committee on Monday July 19.
Humanities student and Canadian Interuniversity Sport Woman Swimmer of the Year Erin Gammel will join Dinos club swimmers Lauren van Oosten, Rick Say and Morgan Knabe in competing for Team Canada. They’ll be coached in part by Jan Birdman of the U of C Swim Club.
Environmental Design MA student Malindi Elmore will race on the track and is joined by coach Les Gramantik from the Dinos Track and Field team.
Grant Golding from the U of C gymnastics club looks forward to the Olympic experience and will be coached by Tony Smith, from the U of C gymnastics club. Nathan Gafuik, also from the U of C club, will go as a backup.
In wrestling, U of C club member Nico Jacobs will compete for Nambia, while fellow club member Christine Nordhagen, who coaches at U of C will go to Athens representing Canada. Women’s wrestling Head Coach Leigh Vierling who does the same for Wrestling Canada will coach for Team Canada.
Rounding out the U of C contingent are Psychology student Christine Dunnette who will test her skills in fencing, alumna Jody Patrick who will compete in badminton and alumna Cora Campbell who will be part of Canada’s water polo team.
